About

Adrian was a Roman officer serving in Nicomedia in the early fourth century, during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. Moved by the courage of the Christians he was ordered to guard, he converted to the faith.

He was arrested and tortured for his new faith, and tradition says his wife Natalia encouraged him to remain steadfast. He was martyred around 306, and Natalia preserved his relics, which were later taken to Rome.

He is venerated as a martyr and as the patron saint of butchers, soldiers, and arms dealers, and his feast is kept on September 8.

Suggested prayer

O God, who gave the soldier Adrian courage to lay down his arms and take up the Cross, grant through his intercession that butchers and all who work with their hands may serve You in their labor and remain steadfast in faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
