About
Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida in Galilee and the brother of Simon Peter. He was first a disciple of John the Baptist, who pointed him to Jesus as the Lamb of God. Andrew immediately followed Christ and then brought his brother Peter to him, becoming the first-called of the apostles.
According to tradition, Andrew preached the Gospel in Greece and Asia Minor and was martyred at Patras on an X-shaped cross, which came to be known as Saint Andrew's Cross. He is venerated as the patron saint of Scotland, Russia, and Greece.
As a fisherman by trade, Andrew is invoked as the patron saint of fishermen and all who work at sea.
Prayer
St. Andrew, who left your nets at the first call and brought your brother Peter to the Lord, pray for fishermen and all who labor at sea, that they may be kept safe and draw many souls to Christ. Amen.
