About
Barbara was, according to tradition, the daughter of a wealthy pagan named Dioscorus, who kept her shut in a tower to preserve her from the world. She secretly became a Christian and had a third window added to her bathhouse in honor of the Trinity.
When her father discovered her faith, he denounced her to the authorities. She was tortured and condemned to death, and her father himself carried out the sentence, after which he was struck by lightning.
She is venerated as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and is the patron saint of architects, builders, miners, and artillerymen, and is invoked against lightning and sudden death.
Prayer
St. Barbara, who had a third window cut in your bathhouse in honor of the Trinity, pray for architects and builders, that their work may serve the good of all and give glory to God. Amen.
