About
Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, named in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He is traditionally identified with Nathanael, whom Philip brought to Jesus in the Gospel of John.
After Pentecost, tradition holds that he preached the Gospel in India, Mesopotamia, and Armenia, where he is especially venerated. He is said to have been martyred by being flayed alive, and his relics were later venerated in Rome and elsewhere.
He is the patron saint of tanners, leatherworkers, and bookbinders, and his feast is kept on August 24.
Prayer
St. Bartholomew, whom Philip brought to Jesus and who carried the Gospel to Armenia, pray for tanners and all who work with leather, that they may labor with integrity and follow Christ faithfully. Amen.
