About

Blaise was a physician and bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who lived in the third and early fourth centuries. According to tradition, during the persecution of Christians he withdrew to a cave in the mountains, where he lived among wild animals and blessed and healed them.

While imprisoned, he is said to have saved a boy who was choking on a fish bone, a miracle that made him the patron of throat ailments. He was tortured and beheaded around 316, during the persecution of the emperor Licinius.

Devotion to St. Blaise spread widely in both East and West. On his feast day, February 3, the Church blesses throats with two crossed candles, invoking his intercession against diseases of the throat and other illnesses.
