About
Saint Christopher of Trebizond was the head of the Soumela Monastery on Mount Mela in the second half of the seventh century, ruling the famous monastery during the years 641 to 668. He is sometimes called Saint Christopher of Gazara. The Soumela Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was one of the most revered spiritual centers of the Pontic Greek world, perched high on a cliff face in the mountains south of Trebizond. As its superior, Christopher guided the monks in prayer, liturgy, and the ascetic life, preserving the faith of the region through a period of political upheaval and Arab advance.
Suggested prayer
O God, who called the abbot Christopher to guide the monks of Soumela in prayer upon the mountain, grant through his intercession that we may seek Your face in stillness and preserve the faith in every age. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
