About

Collen was a seventh-century Welsh monk whose memory is preserved in the town of Llangollen, which takes its name from his hermitage—llan and Collen. Tradition holds that he lived as a solitary on the hillside above the Dee valley, devoting himself to prayer and the ascetic life. Legends surround him, including an encounter with a giant and a journey by angelic guidance to a heavenly realm. Though few historical facts survive, his name endures in the Welsh landscape he sanctified by his presence. Collen represents the early Celtic monastic tradition that spread the faith through quiet, hidden lives of prayer and devotion.

Suggested prayer

O God, who called St. Collen to seek You in the solitude of the Welsh hills, grant through his intercession that we may find in quiet prayer the depths of Your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
