About
Jozef De Veuster was born in 1840 in Tremelo, Belgium, and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, taking the name Damien. In 1864 he was sent to the Hawaiian Islands as a missionary and was ordained in Honolulu.
In 1873 he volunteered to serve the leper colony at Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai, where the sick were exiled and left largely to fend for themselves. For sixteen years he served as priest, doctor, carpenter, and undertaker, building homes, a church, and an orphanage, and restoring dignity to the settlement.
He contracted leprosy himself in 1884 and died of the disease in 1889. He was canonized in 2009 and is venerated as a patron of lepers and of those with leprosy and HIV/AIDS.
Prayer
St. Damien, who volunteered for Kalaupapa and served its lepers as priest, doctor, carpenter, and undertaker until the disease took you too, pray for all who suffer illness and for those who care for them. Amen.
