About
Faustina was born Helena Kowalska in 1905 in a poor Polish village. At twenty she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Warsaw, where she worked as a cook, gardener, and porter.
From 1931 she received visions of Jesus, who asked her to spread devotion to the Divine Mercy and to have an image painted with the words "Jesus, I trust in You." At the direction of her confessor she kept a diary recording these revelations, which has become one of the most widely read spiritual works of modern times.
Faustina died of tuberculosis in 1938 at the age of thirty-three and was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who established Divine Mercy Sunday. She is a patron of those devoted to the Divine Mercy and a model of humble prayer life.
