About
Gemma Galgani was born near Lucca, Italy, in 1878. After the death of her mother, she took charge of the household and cared for her father and siblings. She longed for the religious life, but poor health and family duties kept her from entering a convent.
In 1899 she developed tuberculosis of the spine, and she suffered for years from severe back pain and other ailments. She was cured, she believed, through the intercession of St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. She later received the stigmata and experienced frequent ecstasies.
Gemma died in Lucca in 1903 at the age of twenty-five and was canonized in 1940. She is invoked by those suffering from back pain, spinal disease, and other bodily afflictions.
Prayer
St. Gemma Galgani, who bore the wounds of Christ and offered the pain of your spine for sinners, pray for all who suffer back pain and bodily affliction, that their suffering may unite them to the Cross. Amen.
