About

Hildegard of Bingen was born in 1098 in the Rhineland. Enclosed as a child with the anchoress Jutta, she became abbess of the community at Disibodenberg and later founded her own monasteries at Rupertsberg and Eibingen.

She was a visionary, theologian, composer, and naturalist. Her writings include Scivias, a record of her visions, works on medicine and natural history, and a large body of liturgical music. She corresponded with popes, emperors, and bishops, and preached publicly at a time when few women did.

She died in 1179. Pope Benedict XVI declared her a Doctor of the Church in 2012, recognizing her as one of the great teachers of the faith.

Suggested prayer

O God, who gave St. Hildegard of Bingen visions from childhood and the gift to set them to music, grant through her intercession that musicians and scientists may glorify You and reveal the harmony of Your creation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
