About

Saint Namatius is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a holy confessor of early Gaul. Though few details of his life have survived the centuries, his memory was preserved by the faithful who honored his steadfast devotion to Christ in a time of uncertainty and trial. His cult developed around the region of Clermont in the Auvergne, where local tradition held him in great esteem as a shepherd of souls.

The hagiographic tradition presents Namatius as a man of deep prayer and pastoral charity, one who labored quietly among his people to build up the Church in its earliest and most vulnerable days. He is counted among those missionary confessors whose hidden fidelity laid the foundations of Christian civilization in what is now France. His feast is observed on October 27.
