About

Saint Nicetas of Remesiana was an early Christian bishop, writer, and theologian who labored in the Roman province of Dacia Mediterranea, in what is now the Balkans. He served as bishop of Remesiana and devoted his life to spreading the Gospel among peoples who still lived in the shadow of paganism, preaching Christ across rugged mountains and valleys.

Nicetas was also a writer of hymns and theological works. He is commonly identified with the author of the Latin hymn Te Deum Laudamus, one of the most ancient songs of praise in the Church's liturgy, though scholars debate the attribution.

He is honored as a missionary bishop and a father of the Church in the Danube region. His feast on June 22 celebrates a life given to making Christ known.

Suggested prayer

O God, who made your bishop Nicetas a herald of the Gospel among the nations and a singer of your praise, grant through his intercession that we may proclaim your glory in both word and song. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
