About
Peregrine Laziosi was born around 1260 into a wealthy family in Forlì, Italy. As a young man he was active in anti-papal politics and, according to tradition, once struck St. Philip Benizi during a riot. Philip's gentle response moved Peregrine deeply, and he soon repented and joined the Servite Order in Siena.
Peregrine became known for his austerity and silence, and returned to Forlì to found a Servite community. Late in life he developed a cancerous sore on his leg, and when amputation was planned, he spent the night in prayer before a crucifix. The next morning the wound was healed, and he lived about twenty more years.
He died on May 1, 1345, at about age eighty-five, and was canonized in 1726. Peregrine is the patron saint of those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses.
Prayer
O great St. Peregrine, you who were miraculously cured of cancer, obtain for me the grace to accept my suffering with patience and, if it be God's will, the healing I seek. Amen.
