About
Pope Eumenes was the seventh Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, reigning from 129 to 141 AD, and stood in the succession of St. Mark the Evangelist, who founded the great Church of Alexandria. As chief shepherd of the Egyptian Church he guided the faithful through the reigns of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, a period of relative calm in which the Church was able to grow and deepen its witness.
Alexandria in his day was one of the great intellectual and commercial capitals of the Roman world, a crossroads of Greek, Jewish, and Egyptian culture, and the see he presided over would soon produce some of the most distinguished theologians of the early Church. Eumenes is honoured as a saint in the Coptic Orthodox tradition, and his feast is kept on October 19.
Suggested prayer
O God, who made Pope St. Eumenes a faithful patriarch of Alexandria in the line of your evangelist Mark, grant through his intercession that the ancient churches of the East may stand firm in the faith and that those who lead them may be wise and holy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
