About
Pope Evaristus, also known as Aristus, served as Bishop of Rome from about 99/100 until his death around 107/108, the fifth successor of St. Peter. The Liber Pontificalis says he was a Greek by birth from Bethlehem, the son of a Greek Jew named Judah. His pontificate spanned the close of the apostolic age, for St. John the Apostle, the last of the Twelve, likely died during his reign.
He is credited with dividing the titles among the priests of Rome and ordaining seven deacons to assist the bishop's preaching. By tradition he decreed that marriages be celebrated publicly with a priest's blessing. The Liber Pontificalis calls him crowned with martyrdom, and he is buried near St. Peter beneath St. Peter's Basilica. His feast is October 26.
Suggested prayer
O God, who made Pope St. Evaristus a faithful successor of the apostle Peter and a witness to the close of the apostolic age, grant through his intercession that Christian marriage may be honoured as a sacrament and that those ordained to your service may be found worthy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
