About
Theodosius I served as Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria in the turbulent sixth century, a time when the Churches were divided over the Council of Chalcedon. He is remembered as the last Patriarch of Alexandria recognized by both the Coptic Orthodox Christians and the Chalcedonian Melchites, standing at a fragile bridge between two communions that would soon part ways. His ministry was exercised amid fierce theological dispute and the suffering of a divided Christian people. The Coptic Church venerates him as a confessor of the faith who upheld his people's conscience in a time of upheaval. His feast on June 22 recalls a pastor who sought to hold together what the politics of the age were pulling apart.
Suggested prayer
O God, who made your servant Theodosius a shepherd amid the divisions of his people, grant through his intercession that the divided Churches may seek the unity that Christ prayed for and find in each other the fellowship of one faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
