About

Rose was born in 1586 in Lima, Peru, and was given the name Isabel, but her mother called her Rose because of her beauty. From childhood she was devoted to prayer and penance, and she refused marriage, consecrating herself to Christ.

She became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic and lived a life of prayer and service in a small hermitage in her family's garden. She cared for the sick and the poor of Lima and endured many trials with patience and joy.

She died on August 24, 1617, and was canonized in 1671, the first saint of the Americas. She is venerated as the patron saint of single women.

Suggested prayer

O God, who gave Rose of Lima a crown of thorns hidden beneath roses and made her the first saint of the Americas, grant through her intercession that single women may embrace suffering for Christ with love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
