About
Rumon of Tavistock (also Ronan, Ruadan, or Ruan) is a saint venerated in the Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox traditions. Likely a missionary from Ireland, he is said to have emigrated in the fifth or sixth century and established a hermitage near Falmouth, Cornwall. Alban Butler calls him a bishop, though his see is unknown; some authorities identify him with Ronan venerated in Brittany.
He is associated with Tavistock, Romansleigh in Devon, and Ruan Lanihorne in Cornwall. In 974, Ordulf, Earl of Devon, founded the Abbey of Saint Mary and Saint Rumon at Tavistock, and in 981 the saint's relics were translated there from Ruan Lanihorne. He belongs to the ancient company of British saints whose holiness was proclaimed by the people's devotion before formal canonization arose.
Suggested prayer
O God, who made your servant Rumon a light of faith among the peoples of Devon, grant through his intercession that the faithful of that land may persevere in your love and bear witness to your Gospel. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
