About
The Twelve Apostles of Ireland were twelve early Irish monastic saints of the sixth century who studied under St. Finnian at his celebrated monastic school at Clonard Abbey in County Meath. In that great nursery of Irish learning and holiness, they absorbed Scripture, ascetic discipline, and missionary zeal before fanning out across Ireland and beyond to found their own churches and monasteries. Their names became synonymous with the golden age of Irish monasticism, when the island of saints and scholars sent forth waves of missionaries to re-evangelize a post-Roman Europe. Together they represent the collective fruit of one holy teacher's labors and the power of a shared life of study and prayer.
Suggested prayer
O God, who formed the Twelve Apostles of Ireland in the school of St. Finnian and sent them forth to sow Your Gospel, grant through their intercession that learning and holiness may flourish together in Your Church. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
