About

Urban of Langres served as the sixth Bishop of Langres in Gaul from the year 374 until his death, shepherding a diocese in the twilight of the Roman Empire. Medieval devotion made him the patron of all who tend the vine: vine-growers, vine-dressers, gardeners, vintners, and coopers. The faithful invoked his intercession against the dangers that threaten the harvest, blight and frost and storms, and against the temptations of alcoholism and the faintness that afflicts laborers in the field. His sister Leodegaria shared his holiness. For centuries the wine-growers of Burgundy have honored him as their heavenly protector and advocate before God.
