About
Saint Bernulf, or Bernold, of Utrecht was Bishop of Utrecht from 1026 or 1027 until his death in 1054. A faithful shepherd of the Church in the Low Countries, he governed the diocese during a period of reform and consolidation, supporting monastic life and the building of churches. He was a friend and ally of the imperial bishops who laboured to renew the discipline of the clergy in the eleventh century.
Bernold died in 1054 and was soon venerated as a saint by the faithful of his diocese. His cult was particularly strong among the artists and craftsmen of the Netherlands, who claimed him as their patron. He is remembered as a zealous bishop whose labours strengthened the Church in Utrecht and whose intercession is sought by all who work with their hands to make beautiful things for the glory of God.
Suggested prayer
O God, who made your servant Bernold a faithful bishop of Utrecht and a patron of artists and craftsmen, grant through his intercession that all who labour with their hands may offer their work as a hymn of praise to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
