About

Ebontius, also called Ebon, Pontius, or Ponce, was born in Comminges, Haute Garonne, France, and entered a Benedictine monastery, where he rose to be abbot. After the recapture of Barbastro from the Moors, he was made Bishop of Barbastro in Spain, taking up the see of a frontier city only lately won back to Christendom. He governed the newly restored diocese with care, re-establishing the liturgy and the sacraments among a people long under Muslim rule. He is remembered as a monk, an abbot, and a bishop who served the Church on the contested border of the Reconquista, bringing the fullness of the faith to a town reclaimed for Christ.

Suggested prayer

O God, who called St. Ebontius from the cloister to the frontier, that he might restore the faith to a people long deprived of it, grant through his intercession that we may carry the Gospel wherever it is not yet known. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
