About

Ephraim II of Pereyaslav, also called Ephraim of the Caves, was a bishop of Pereyaslavl in Kievan Rus' and a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the great monastery of the caves. He belonged to the flowering of Eastern Christian monasticism in the medieval Russian church.

Ephraim embraced the ascetic life of the Lavra, devoting himself to prayer, fasting, and the discipline of the cloister. Called to pastoral service, he was consecrated bishop of Pereyaslavl, where he labored to instruct the faithful and uphold the faith in a frontier see subject to nomadic raids and political upheaval.

Venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, his memory is honored among the holy bishops and monks of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. His feast is January 28.
