About

Saint Gregory of Agrigento was a Sicilian Christian prelate who served as Bishop of Agrigento from the year 590 and into the early seventh century. He lived and ministered in a Sicily only recently freed from the old pagan order, shepherding his people in the faith while corresponding with Pope Gregory the Great. Two semi-legendary saint's lives recount his virtues and trials, and tradition also credits him with a commentary on the Book of Ecclesiastes, though scholars have debated both identifications. Whatever the precise boundaries of the historical record, the Church of Agrigento honored him as a holy pastor, a man of learning and prayer, whose labors strengthened the Christian roots of his native island.
