About
Saint Sacerdos of Saguntum (died c. 560 AD) is a Spanish saint venerated as a bishop of Saguntum, the ancient town on the eastern coast of Hispania that is now Murviedro (Sagunto, in the modern province of Valencia). He served as shepherd of that see during the turbulent age of the Visigothic Kingdom, when the Church in Hispania labored to preserve the faith amid the decline of Roman order and the rise of new rulers.
He is honored as the patron saint of Saguntum, where the faithful have long invoked his intercession. He is said to have died of natural causes, and his memory has been preserved in the devotion of the local church through the centuries—a witness to the holiness of life that the people of that place recognized in their bishop and commend to God's mercy still.
Suggested prayer
O God, who made your servant Sacerdos a faithful shepherd of Saguntum and patron of its people, grant through his intercession that the towns and cities of the world may be blessed with pastors after your own heart. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
