About

Saints Daniel and Verda were Christian martyrs who suffered under King Shapur II of Persia during the great persecution of the fourth century. In those days the Church in Persia was fiercely oppressed, and many confessors laid down their lives rather than deny the faith they had received.

Daniel and Verda are honoured together on February 21 as witnesses to the cost of discipleship in a land where confessing Christ could mean death. Little else of their story has come down to us, but their names are preserved among the martyrs of the East, who strengthen the Church by their sacrifice.

Suggested prayer

O God, who gave Saints Daniel and Verda grace to confess your name in the hour of trial, grant through their intercession that all who suffer for the faith may be steadfast and that your Church may be strengthened by the blood of her martyrs. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
